Corn Snake

The name "corn snake" is a relic from the days when southern farmers stored harvested ears in a wooden frame or log building called a cradle. Rats and mice came the corn crib to feed on the corn, and corn snakes came to feed on the rodents. Corn snakes are found in wooded groves, rocky slopes, meadows, woodlots, barns and abandoned buildings. Corn snakes are found throughout the southeastern and central United States. However, Corn snakes are most abundant in Florida and the southeastern U.S.

Corn snakes are slender, with a length of 24-72 inches (61-182 cm). They are usually brown or orange-yellow, with large black borders red spots in the middle of the back. On the belly are alternating rows of black and white spots, which resembles a checkerboard pattern. Considerable variation occurs in the color and patterns of the individual Corn snake, depending on the age of the hose and the area of ​​the country in which it is found. Hatchlings are missing a large portion of the bright color found on adults. 

 

Corn snakes are mostly daytime. They readily climb trees and enter abandoned buildings in search of prey. They are very secretive and spend most of their time underground prowling through rodent burrows. They often hide under loose bark and under logs, rocks and other debris during the day. In colder regions, Corn snakes hibernate in the winter. However, in the more temperate climate along the coast shelter in rock crevices and logs during cold weather, and comes out on warm days to enjoy the warmth of the sun, a process known as hibernation. In cold weather, Corn snakes are less active and therefore less to hunt.


Corn snakes do not usually eat each day instead they feed every few days. Young Corn snake tend to feed on lizards and frogs, while adults feed on larger prey such as mice, rats, birds and bats. They are constrictors. First a Corn snake bites its prey to a solid grip, then it runs quickly one or more roles from her body around the victim. The snake squeezes well until he suffocates the prey. Then swallow the food whole, usually head first. However, corn snakes also observed swallowing small prey life. 

 

Corn snakes are relatively easy to grow. First, they must go through a cooling period, usually 60 to 90 days long. This is getting them ready for breeding and to tell them that it is time to reproduce. Corn snakes brumate in a place where they can not get upset and not worry about predators. When the summer they go out to warm up to their regular temperature. Corn snakes usually breed shortly after the winter cooling. The eggs are oblong with a leathery, flexible shell. About 10 weeks after laying, the young snakes use a special scale called an egg tooth to cut slits in the shell, from which they come at about 5 inches in length. 

 

Corn snakes, like other reptiles, and amphibians, in general, have a great metabolic rate which is able to operate at a low oxygen and blood pressure. This allows them to survive long periods in oxygen-depleted atmosphere, which is why drowning a snake is not effective. And even stranger is that the scientists have detected signs of awareness of the head of a snake of about an hour after the head was cut off from the rest of the body. Corn snakes are not endangered. However, Corn snakes are often confused with Copperheads and slain. They are also popular as pets. They are the most snake species bred for pet purposes. But they are sometimes caught in the wild to be sold as pets. This does not seem a serious threat to this species forms at this time.

Animal Unique | Snake | Snakes are elongate, limbless, flexible reptiles. There are approximately 2700 species of snakes, 375 of these are poisonous. Most species are nonvenomous and those that are primarily used poison to kill and to subdue prey rather than for self defense. Some have poison potent enough to cause painful injury or death to humans. Nonvenomous snakes swallow prey either alive or kill by constriction. Hoses can be distinguished from legless lizards by their lack of eyelids and external ears. Many species of snakes have skulls with more joints than their lizard ancestors, making them prey much larger than their heads with their highly mobile jaws to swallow. Snakes are found in many habitats in the water, forests, deserts and prairies.

Snakes eat their prey whole and are able to prey three times larger than the diameter of their head because they consume lower jaw can separate from the upper jaw. To prevent escaping prey, snakes have rear-facing teeth keep their prey in their mouths. Smaller snakes eat smaller prey. Young pythons feed on lizards can start or mice and graduate to small deer or antelope as an adult, for example.  Poisonous snakes inject their prey with poison, while constrictors squeeze their prey. Snakes usually do not prey on humans, and most will not attack unless people the snake is startled or injured, but prefer to avoid contact. With the exception of large constrictors, nonvenomous snakes are no threat to humans. The bite of nonvenomous snakes is usually harmless because their teeth are designed to grab and hold, rather than tearing or inflicting a deep puncture wound. Although the possibility of infection and tissue damage is present in the bite of a nonvenomous snake, poisonous snakes present far greater hazard to humans.


The skin of a snake is covered with scales. Contrary to popular notion of snakes slimy because of possible confusion of snakes with worms, snakeskin has a smooth, dry texture. Most snakes use special belly scales to travel gripping surfaces. The eyelids of a snake are transparent "spectacle" scales which remain permanently closed, also known as brilliance. A snake shedding its skin. Moulting occurs periodically throughout life a snake. The inside of the old skin liquefies. After a few days, the eyes clear and the snake "crawls" out of its old skin. In some parts of the world, especially in India, snake charming is a roadside show performed by a charmer. In one such show, the snake charmer carries a basket that contains a snake which he seemingly charms by playing tunes from his trashy like musical instrument, which the snake responds. They do have internal ears, and respond to the motion of the flute, and not the actual sound. In some cultures the consumption of snakes is acceptable or even considered a delicacy, prized for its alleged pharmaceutical effect of warming the heart. Snake soup of Cantonese cuisine is consumed by the locals in the autumn, to warm their bodies. Western cultures document the consumption of snakes under extreme circumstances of hunger.


In the Western world, some snakes (especially docile species such as the ball python and corn snake) kept as pets. To meet this demand a captive breeding industry has developed. Snakes bred in captivity animals tend to develop the site and are considered preferable to wild caught specimens. Snakes can be very low maintenance pets, especially compared to more traditional types. They require minimal space, as most species do not exceed five feet in length.
