Mandrill is perhaps the most colorful primate. It has an olive green or dark gray coat with yellow and black stripes and a white belly. The hairless face has an elongated muzzle with distinctive characteristics, such as a red stripe in the middle and excellent blue ridges on the sides. It also has red nose and lips, a yellow beard and white tuffs. The areas around the genitals and anus are multi-colored, being red, pink, blue, scarlet, and purple.

The male Mandrill monkey is the toughest in the world, although the overall length is relatively short because of his rudimentary tail and, because of the high sexual dimorphism, baboons, including the Chacma and Olive average about the same weight. Compared with the largest baboons, the Mandrill is apelike in structure, with a powerful and compact, shorter, thicker branches that are longer in the front and almost no tail. Males are larger than females, and more daring colors. This spectacular appearance, the male Mandrill declares its identity to other animals, as well as the announcement of his sex and virility for women.

Mandrill is an omnivore. It prefers to eat fruit, but also eat leaves, vines, bark, stems, and fiber. He also consumes mushrooms and soil. With animals, Mandrills mostly eat invertebrates, especially ants, beetles, termites, crickets, spiders, snails, and scorpions. It will also eat eggs, or even vertebrates such as birds, turtles, frogs, porcupines, rats and shrews. Mandrillsare in turn preyed on mainly by leopards, besides crowned eagles and African Rock Pythons. It is thought that most predators are a threat especially young Mandrills, with the risk of predation decreasing in adult women and especially adult males.

Mandrills live in mixed groups of up to 40. There is a strict hierarchy among the group: a dominant male, large and brightly colored, the head of each group, couples with fertile females and paternity almost all of the infants. Groups are very noisy, with individuals communicating with deep grunts and high-pitched crowing as they feed, when it's time to move the alpha male sends a two-phase grunt. Mandrillsmost of their day foraging for fruits and seeds, eggs and small animals, and when night falls they retire to the trees for safety. Mandrill populations have suffered drastic declines due to hunting for their meat. As human settlements expand, the Mandrills are losing their habitat to logging and clearing for agriculture
